How to Use Apple Intelligence’s ‘Image Playground’

Apple has just rolled out iOS 18.1.1, but the upcoming iOS 18.2 update will bring exciting new features, including Image Playground—an innovative image generation tool that turns text descriptions into cartoon-style images. Here’s what you need to know about this Apple Intelligence feature, including how to use it and when it will be available.

What is Image Playground?

Image Playground is part of Apple Intelligence, a collection of AI-powered tools from Apple. This feature allows users to input a text prompt, and the AI will generate an image in a cartoonish style.

You can access Image Playground either through a dedicated image creation app or via the Messages app by tapping the plus (+) button next to the text box. The app is available on the Home Screen, with an icon resembling a white cat or fox (or possibly another furry animal, though the exact creature is unclear).

How to Generate Images with Image Playground

Using Image Playground is straightforward. Like other image generators, it has a text input field where you can describe an image, such as “a dog blowing out birthday candles on a cake.” The AI will then create an image based on your description.

If the result isn’t quite what you envisioned, you can refine it by adding more details to your description or choosing from Apple’s suggested prompts. You’ll be presented with several image options to swipe through and select your favorite.

Additionally, you can upload a photo of yourself, a pet, or a family member, and have the AI generate a new image, complete with fun additions like a party hat or a beach backdrop. You can also change the art style of the generated image.

When Does Image Playground Launch?

Image Playground is available as part of the iOS 18.2 public beta. If you’re enrolled in Apple’s beta software program, you can start using it right away. The official release is expected in December.
